Video of a lecture recorder allegedly insulting Islam was released to the media, prompting an online backlash.

The recording was made by the man known as Islam Lecturer in New York City, who claims he is an expert on Islam, and has made multiple appearances on American TV.

“I am not a professional, I’m not a professor, I am not an expert,” Islam Lecturing said in a YouTube video.

He told the New York Daily News that the recording was an attempt to make Islam more palatable to America.

“We’re a country that values the idea of freedom and the right to practice one’s religion, we don’t believe that we can say, ‘well, we are a democracy’,” he said.

“That’s just not going to happen.”

Islam Lecturing, who has since released a second video, has been accused of “insult[ing] Islam” by the American Civil Liberties Union and the Anti-Defamation League.

His claims are not supported by his teaching methods, which include an Islamic “litany” of the Prophet Muhammad’s life.
